Val Griffiths Jones

I am both a painter and object maker. My career started in the early 1980s, when using “home making”, and typically “women's “ techniques, I exhibited through out New Zealand. The exhibitions, Stuffed Stuff Show, and later my solo show, Stuffing On broke new ground exhibiting works made in fabric , expressing feminist issues in public galleries. I continue to stitch and sculpt expressing concerns of an older woman. I love using knitting, crochet, dying, sculpting cloth and embroidery in non traditional ways.

A key work in recent years , After Shock, expresses personal frustration when disaster occurs, and it seems impossible to help or be useful. This work is in the care of Eastern Southland Gallery.

As a painter I work often outdoors, using lots of paint freely and expressively. I celebrate our glorious landscapes, while at times questioning how we are (ab)using them.

I have facilitated workshops, introducing people to drawing, fibre work, printing and becoming creative, and used art in therapeutic situations. I am thankful that I developed a confidence to express myself, through art and creative practice right through my lifetime.
