The Diversion Gallery

I started The Diversion Gallery in 1999 to bring to Marlborough the work of prominent and established New Zealand contemporary artists, who were previously seldom seen here: offering a first-hand viewing experience, the chance for locals to meet leading NZ artists in person at openings, and putting Marlborough on the map to encourage art lovers to come to our region - and to visit local artists and other galleries.

Based on the Picton waterfront, we often refer travellers to other arts venues in Picton and throughout Marlborough. As a former journalist, I often write about artists including editing books on senior NZ artists. Our exhibitions of artists such as Nigel Brown, Don Binney, Michael Smither, and JS Parker attract attention nationally. We also welcome small school art groups and collector groups for a private insight into the art, sometimes with the artist, at no charge.

The Diversion was named after a painting by the late Marlborough artist JS Parker, of The Diversion of the Wairau River, a lifeblood of the region. The gallery is open 10am-4pm Wednesday to Saturday or on request.
